How does a girl who confused obeyance, shame, abuse, and neglect for Love, become a Heart Coach?
I knew of Love’s existence. It was as elusive as the extinct, unimaginable Dodo birds. But Mamie and Pépère Martin, the couple who welcomed my mother to France in the late 1950’s, were Love exemplified.
In stark contrast to my father, Pépère showered his wife with adoration. To him, she was the most precious creature he’d ever known. He tended to her with unwavering attention, care, kindness, and consideration ensuring her every need was met. His devotion knew no bounds.
Like any couple, they had their disagreements, with Mamie’s voice rising above his, both passionately defending their positions. Bit it always ended in peals of laughter – a recognition that they momentarily lost sight of the highest, most beautiful version each saw in each other. Their relationship operated on the principle of a win-win or no deal.
Such relational dynamic was unfathomable to me.
My life was marked by a series of relational failures attracting partners who were emotionally distant, recreating the nostalgic experience of my own parent’s drama.
My life was marked by a series of relational failures attracting partners who were emotionally distant, recreating the nostalgic experience of my own parent’s drama. Mamie and Pépère’s Love became my beacon, the yardstick for success I believed I could never attain.
Seeing tangible evidence of the kind of Love I yearned for, I knew it was possible. All I needed was to believe it was possible for me. That was a crucial first step.
A picture of Mamie and Pépère hangs in our bedroom, holding place of honor. It serves as a reminder of the arduous journey I undertook to lay claim to this profound Love with my husband and son, and dedication I bring to my work each day in supporting others to do the same.
My success as a Heart Coach is on the back of their influence.
In a world where divorce, disconnection, disenfranchisement, and disposability prevail, championing Love’s triumph is a revolutionary act. One with the power to change the course of history.
