Scales Staredown: 3 Ways to Get Your HottieBody Back

I tossed my scales out about three years ago under the guise that I would know I’d come home to my body when I could comfortably slip into my pre-breakup clothes.

Then, two weeks ago, I went to Utah for a USANA convention, where I engaged in a stare down contest with the scales in my hotel bathroom.  I knew it was time to get real with myself.  But, hey, I still looked pretty sexy, albeit a bit more rotund…  I had taken to calling myself “Rubenesque” in an effort to justify my new shape. How bad could it be???  I got on…

Twenty pounds.  Wow.

The number looming, unavoidable, explained why for the past 3 years I had felt like an alien in my own body no matter what efforts I “tried” to put into practice.

Reality check: Stepping onto that scales every bit of courage I had, and I did so reciting the mantra, “Do it, Afraid.”  Here’s the truth: Along with that breakup, I had broken up with myself.  For the past three years I had treated my body with as much avoidance, unavailability, lack of respect and intimacy as I had experienced in my last relationship.

Talk about self-sabotage.

My past three year’s efforts at reclaiming my body had consisted of changing my poor habits for 2-3 months or so, then cheating a little, then a little more, and more, slipping right down into unhealthy ways, including but not limited to: too much sugar, too much wine (sugar in another form), lots of processed foods, and not enough water.

No wonder I felt horrible.

No wonder I felt foggy.

No wonder I had no energy.

No wonder I felt stuck in my career.

No wonder I couldn’t move ahead with my life.

I had lost my home.

I have never had to really worry about my figure.  Having been raised by an at-home mom who took pride in cooking everything from scratch, eating whole foods was a no-brainer.  And exercise?  I was born dancing and accustomed to challenging physical work.  Before meeting my ex-boyfriend, I had been in the best shape of my life.

But, when blending my family with his, I lost my way trying to be a pleaser.  He and his children consumed massive quantities of procesed foods.  In fact, when we first moved in together, I would lovingly cook meals, only to be rewarded by his daughter’s grimaces of disgust.  She would pick at her place, then be allowed to push it away so she could make a bee line for the freezer where she would consume 4-5 ice pops to satiate her for the evening.  It ate me up inside.

So, to keep the peace and ensure everyone ate, I began to make adjustments, and more adjustments…  Until eating whole foods became more the exception than the rule.

When I walked away from the relationship, I took the addiction with me and left my Self behind.

I had no clue how far I’d gone until I stepped on that scales two weeks ago.

In one instant my head caught up with my heart, and I knew what I had to do:  get  my Hottie Body back.  This meant working a program I have used with other women to RESET their body.

Although I have still not picked up a scales, I’ve noticed my body is responding.  My eyes are looking clearer.   My belly inflammation has gone down.  My bra is fitting more smoothly.  My skin has more tone.  And my mind fog?  Dissipating…

I do have a HottieBody Program coming up soon, but right now I want to share with you 3 things that I’ve changed…

1. Eating healthfully 5 times a day – 

Think about it.  As babies how often did we eat?  Most babies I know eat every few hours. As we grew we may have found ourselves eating throughout the day.  Not big meals,  more like grazing.

Physiologically, it does make sense. When you are eating regularly throughout the day, your body knows that more food is to be expected, and it’s more likely to burn the calories you consume than store them as fat.

When you eat fewer meals throughout the day (especially if you are a meal skipper), you stress your body out and send your brain a signal that there is a food shortage.  So your primal hunger drive kicks in: that’s the drive that sends you searching for high calorie food to ensure your survival.  Your starving brain wants glucose and energy  fast and will have you seeking out high calorie carbohydrate foods in the form of candy, breads, junk food…

Here’s the kicker: brain imaging in certain studies shows that the reward pathways in our brains (which are closely linked to survival) are more highly activated by high calorie foods after we skip or miss breakfast.

It’s not your willpower that is deficient.  It’s biological and manageable by eating regularly throughout the day.

 2. Drinking way more purified water

I learned a few years ago through my BrainGym training that hunger is sometimes misinterpreted as craving for food when, actually, it could be a sign of dehydration.  Increasing the amount of purified water allows you to curb your appetite as well as allow organs, such as your liver (whose primary function is to burn fat) to do its job properly and assist you in your weight loss.  You want to aim for 64 oz. a day. Your body and your brain will thank you.

3. Moving every single day 

This is much simpler when you plan ahead.  If you get up a half an hour earlier here are some things you could do: pop in a DVD and get your hottie body grooving, walk the dog around the neighborhood, yoga on the deck.  You can engage your family: get on your bike and ride with your kids, on the playground – do what your kids do.  You can engage your friends: take a hike up a mountain, attend a Nia class together, sign up for bellydancing…  Schedule your exercise.  This part has to be planned and put in your calendar.  You know that if it’s not written down, it won’t happen.

    Last March, I came face to face with my overweight body and my out-of-control eating. I was eating all the right things, just way too much of everything. I turned to Weight Watchers which turned out to be perfectly suited to my slightly OCD personality. I loved being accountable to the online WW tools for everything I put in my mouth. I weighed my food, counted my almonds, eliminated gluten, sugar, and alcohol for the duration of my weight loss period. Three months later, I was at my goal weight, sleeping better, feeling more energetic, and fitting into some of my favorite clothes that had been sitting at the back of my closet for years. Now I’m maintaining my goal weight with more mindful eating.
