On Changing Awareness….

http://matmoon.deviantart.com/

I came across this poem today. It exemplifies beautifully the process that so often occurs as we delve into the realm of change. We envision, set an intention, give our full attention to it and, in the process of making this process a habit, (while having an awareness of thoughts and actions that take us off course), we eventually arrive at our intended desire.

This means a consistent, committed and ongoing practice of introspection, intention, attention, no tension…..all the while releasing our preconceived notions on the form it takes. Often, our vision is but a dot in the landscape of possibility.

With awareness, we can identify the pitfalls that keep us stuck in sameness. Although this is, by no means, a linear process, we can be forgiving of ourselves when we fall into familiar holes – trusting that within us lies the correct path.

There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk
— Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
Portia Nelson

Chapter One
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost…. I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend that I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in this same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in … it’s a habit … but, my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter Four
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter Five
I walk down another street.
